ARTIST STATEMENT

My work relates to themes concerning the pathways of change and growth. Through these modulations made of wood, canvas and paint, I have explored the relationship between the external and the internal, the tangible and the intangible. Tree branches ripple through windows of space that simulate the flow of life passing through time and space.

The tree represents a growing personal metaphor for me that evolved largely after my move from the prairies to the interior of B.C. My home in New Denver is surrounded by trees, and the raw materials used to create this work are in abundance just outside the studio door. I was surprised at how deeply I was affected by the natural rhythms of this new environment, so dramatically different from what I had known before. I have identified certain parallels to my own existence through witnessing the seasonal changes of the trees in my surroundings: their cycles, their growth patterns, and instinct to thrive regardless of the circumstances.

This series is a testament to my personal life experiences. As a body of work, they have served to further my understanding of the natural continuum to which all of life seems inextricably linked.
